\"WVD_logo_u-datum-01\"Our research group joined\u00a0the World Voice Day<\/strong>\u00a0this year by organizing a scientific outreach event for high school and university students on April 21st, 2017. Our aim was — just as that of the World Voice Day — to show the beauty, importance and the variegation of the voice.<\/p>\n

The event was opened by dr. habil. G\u00e1bor Bodn\u00e1r, the head of the Department of Music of\u00a0ELTE. The ELTE Pro Musica Choir conducted by Attila Besse also contributed in the opening to show the manifold beauty of voice.<\/p>\n

Prof. dr. Kl\u00e1ra Vicsi DSc, habil. (Head of the Speech Acoustics Laboratory of Budapest University of
\nTechnology and Economics Department\u00a0of Telecommunications\u00a0and Media Informatics, MTA Committee of Acoustic Complex \/AKB\/) talked about the process of hearing, about the risk factors of possible hearing damages, and the protection of hearing in her\u00a0Hogyan m\u0171k\u00f6dik az \u00e9p hall\u00e1s, \u00e9s hogyan \u00f3vhatjuk meg? (‘How does the healthy hearing process work, and how can we protect it?) <\/em>titled presentation. She also introduced the\u00a0\u00d3vd a f\u00fcled!<\/em> <\/a>(‘Protect Your Ears!’) Campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. dr. Hacki Tam\u00e1s, habil. (Medical University of Regensburg, Semmelweis University,\u00a0E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University) gave a presentation entitled\u00a0Az emberi hang mint kommunikat\u00edv, fizikai \u00e9s fiziol\u00f3giai jelens\u00e9g <\/em>(‘The human voice as communicative, physical and physiological phenomenon’). He introduced how vocalization evolved from the very beginnings through the \u00a0various species, and how the human voice works. He also briefly introduced the physiology of voice production.<\/p>\n

The talks were followed by two demo presentations.<\/p>\n

\"DSC_0140\"\"DSC_0142\"Andrea and Tekla asked a kind volunteer student to give her voice to an acoustic demonstration. We aimed at introducing the spectrogram, and to show the students what our speech looks like. The audience was asked to guess in what manners the articulation of the recorded speech sounds differed, and what differences they could find in the corresponding spectrograms.<\/p>\n

\"100_2670\"DSC_0148\"Tam\u00e1s and Gergely showed the students an ultrasound “movie” of the tongue. \u00a0One of the teachers in the audience volunteered to this demonstration. His tongue was shown online on a screen while he was carrying out various speech tasks.<\/p>\n

\"DSC_0149\"\u00a0A quick game was also prepared for the audience: A “Tot\u00f3” (13+1 question quiz with multiple choice design) was handed out at the very beginning of the event. The questions were in connection with the talks, the invited speakers and\u00a0the research group. The most successful students were remunerated with some chocolate, issues of the Journal \u00c9let \u00e9s Tudom\u00e1ny<\/em> (‘Life and Science’) and a DIY larynx<\/a>.<\/p>\n
